The right to keep and bear arms simple, so some idiot doesn't infringe on my right to live. Ask Michael Jordan's father if he wishes he had a gun on him. You can't.

militias were voluntary citizen soldiers, who brought their own guns in the event of some emergency or threat.Taken into the context of the times, maybe the british,or "indian attack" or whatever.People by and large hunted for game as a common practice. This goes w/o saying. Also Ive always had a sneeking feeling that the framers of the constitution wanted US to have the ability to "pull the plug" on our own government, should it become tyranny. Now I do own guns. Do I carry one? hell no. If I was going some where that I thought I was gonna need a gun,why in the hell would I go there? Thats a choice, see? WhY I LOVE america is that it offers choice.Id be pissed off to see that change,or become freedom FROM choice ,rather than freedom OF choice. The right to keep and bear arm is not on obligation to do so,its a choice, and I choose to do so in a respectful manner.

Almost any statement is open to interpretation.... and so is the Bill of Rights. Your observation about looking back with 21st century eyes is a good one, one that I certainly wouldn't ignore, but the framers were not ignorant writers either. They knew about change. That is why they allowed for amendments to be made. Also there is no doubt whatsoever that the right to bear arms was granted, at least in part, to empower the people the means to protect themselves against a goverment that turned tyrannical. With that said, there should be no limitation of the type of "arms" the people have a right to bear. Automatic weapons, grenade launchers even atomic weapons should be available to the people via the local arms shoppe. Otherwise the whole concept of taking back a tyrannical government (who has these same weapons at it's disposal) would be undermined. Is there anyone who agrees with that view?

And a quote from Thomas Jefferson - "The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."
