Man shot and killed in south side Waukegan alley - gmg77 - 03-06-2010 What was this guy on? http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=363839 A Waukegan police officer was lauded Friday for shooting a gunman who had randomly fired shots at pedestrians. Police Chief Artis Yancey told reporters during a news conference the unnamed officer, a 29-year department veteran, "acted with great heroism" when he shot and killed David Melgoza during an exchange of gunfire in an alley about 1:13 p.m. Thursday. "His training and experience helped to carry him through this ordeal," Yancey said. "He acted with great heroism to contain a threat upon the community." The officer received a call that witnesses reported a gunman was firing at pedestrians at 8th Street between Jackson and Victory streets. The officer drove through an alley and encountered Melgoza, 25, of the 3200 block of Charleston, Waukegan, Yancey said. Officials believe Melgoza shot first at the officer, who returned fire twice, grazing Melgoza's thigh with one shot but hitting him in the torso with the other, Yancey said. The second shot killed Melgoza. Yancey said it is unknown how many times Melgoza fired at the officer, but numerous shell casings were recovered at the scene from Melgoza's semiautomatic handgun. Melgoza was taken to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan where he was pronounced dead, said Lake County Coroner Dr. Richard Keller. Yancey said witnesses told investigators Melgoza yelled at passing cars and pedestrians before firing a shot at a random person near 8th and Jackson. Melgoza then calmly walked away and fired two more shots at people in the east alley of the 800 block of South Jackson before the officer arrived, Yancey said. No one was injured in the random shootings, Yancey said. "We don't know or can confirm the shooter's motivators," he said. "But, we know he was taking shots at people coming by." The officer was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for precautionary reasons, Yancey said. The officer was not injured and has since been released. The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, which is routine in all police-involved shootings, Yancey said. The shooting is under investigation by the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force. Re: Man shot and killed in south side Waukegan alley - Dennis_Ista - 03-06-2010 This could have been prevented with Gun Control... Re: Man shot and killed in south side Waukegan alley - johnny99 - 03-06-2010 Gun control? Pffftttt. toolate for that in this country fella. If the govt wanted to do that the time to do so was 100 years ago.Besides we are given that right by the constitution. Id never under any circumstances give up that right. Lets ask this, is a person who is stabbed or beaten to death more or less dead than a person who is shot? Re: Man shot and killed in south side Waukegan alley - Harold - 03-06-2010 That right is granted by God, johnny. The 2nd Amendment merely says your God-given right shall not be infringed. Don't worry about Dennis, he's from Holland, where all life's needs are provided for by the government. That is, until they run out of other people's money. Thank God we live in a republic. Re: Man shot and killed in south side Waukegan alley - Dennis_Ista - 03-06-2010 I doubt God intended for his childeren to start killing eachother... Is not one of the ten commandments: "LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR"?? Re: Man shot and killed in south side Waukegan alley - Dennis_Ista - 03-07-2010 So God does choose sides.... Darn it! Re: Man shot and killed in south side Waukegan alley - Blackdiamond - 03-08-2010 Ista, don't you dare believe that. In fact, I don't think you do. You never did tell me if you had ghetto's in your City. I keep imagining that you live in an almost "heavenly" place. Do you get our local Newspaper? Have you visited other areas in Illinois other than Waukegan? How did you happen to visit this particular place? (Here I go again, acting like Barbara Walters). Re: Man shot and killed in south side Waukegan alley - Dennis_Ista - 03-08-2010 Nah, I do not, just being sarcastic We do not have getto's, but we do have certain neighbourhoods that house lower income. I do not get your local newspaper way out here, unless they allow subscriptors from overseas and send me one every day Would love to receive it though I have been to Chicago, but not many other parts of Illinois, unless flying over it counts I used to work for BP, in inorganic chemistry, but also Oil and Petroleum Derrivates. I have been to North Chicago to study new ways of producing in chemistry at the Abbot Labs, and met certain people there who live in Waukegan. I was allowed to spend the time there at their place. I loved the little town, and my friends told me about the problems with Waukegan. So, with my mind on assisting, I went out and tried to find plces where things might improve. And I post them here Re: Man shot and killed in south side Waukegan alley - Dennis_Ista - 03-08-2010 johnny99 Wrote:Gun control?
