Beach Park soldier dies in Afghanistan

BEACH PARK-- A Beach Park soldier has been killed in Afghanistan, and military officials say the incident is under investigation.
The Department of Defense on Friday announced the death of 25-year-old Sgt. John M. Penich.
The defense department says Penich died Thursday in Karangol Village, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from ``indirect fire.'' Further details were not immediately released.
Penich was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Hood, Texas.
