Beach Park soldier dies in Afghanistan

October 17, 2008

The Associated Press
BEACH PARK-- A Beach Park soldier has been killed in Afghanistan, and military officials say the incident is under investigation.

The Department of Defense on Friday announced the death of 25-year-old Sgt. John M. Penich.

The defense department says Penich died Thursday in Karangol Village, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from ``indirect fire.'' Further details were not immediately released.

Penich was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Hood, Texas.
Yes, it sort of brings the war a little too close to home. We have lost quite a few young soldiers from Lake County. 25 years old. That's really too young.
