Arrogance,Waukegan and the Internet
#61
Hello,
Is there an arbiter on this site? It seems to me that some of the comments posted, especially the last one, are far too personal and offensive. It seems as though there's a vendetta going on. Wauktalk it appears is no better than the Town site in that regard, although at least the arbiter on Town put a stop to most of it. Can anything be done about this? I just won't visit this site if this is how it is going to be. Arbiter?

You're kidding right? What is so bad about that post? Inuendo about being wishy washy? Vendetta? I see it as a simple exposing of hypocrisy. The good old boys didn't like the old forum because of it's power to expose and now this. I say leave it alone.

I agree with Danno. Honey, you'd better believe that SOMEONE is around to do the arbitrating. Why don't you say something really offensive, sit back, and watch the power of an Arbiter, etc. Wink

This thread was started by a sociopath, and it has basically consisted of unnecessary slandering of fellow Waukeganites, some of whom I suspect have never even crossed his path. The thread included 'highlights' such as calling mayoral candidates c*nts and turds. Because of this, the constructive elements of the thread have been lost; this, in turn has the potential to undermine the great achievements of the Talk site. It seems to me as though all the personal attacks are being made by one individual with a propensity for verbally disgorging deranged views of the world. How regretful that this forum, as a mouthpiece for Waukegan citizens, condones such behaviour.

And how utterly regretful it is that Kirsty would desire to stifle free speech.

Slander? Not even close dearie. It would be easy to prove that Kolber supported the good old boys in the past.

I'm so tired of people who think they are so intelligent and better than everyone else when they don't know sh*t from shinola. Equating the providing of a forum with the condoning of behavior is something only an idiot would do if it was done unknowingly and something only a scoundrel would do if it was done knowingly.

Yes, this site is monitored. Yes, I saw the post. No, I'm not going to delete/edit/lock the topic.

As Kirsty has pointed out the topic started off with a slam against an individual for starting a Waukegan-centric forum. Since then, she has stepped up and provided information about said forum which is the effort of a group of individuals to learn more about the mayoral candidates and provide everyone an opportunity to do the same as well as become involved. As she also pointed out, there has been some insult-hurling in the form of questionable language. I edited one word in a post after receiving an emailed complaint. The turd comment and the later post referencing "anyway the wind blows" stand for one simple reason.

If an individual's only method of debating the qualifications of a candidate for public office is to resort to using offensive language, making crude comments, and slinging personal attacks instead of presenting his/her opinion in a meaningful manner, so be it. I believe in the freedom of speech, even for idiots. Let the content of the post reflect the character of the poster for all to see.

Do I condone the behavior? In definition alone and only because I refuse to come out swinging the ban bat every single time a poster types something ridiculous. Will I allow it to continue? That is questionable... I had high hopes that this topic would stay on the the track it had been steered to and hopefully it will get back there if there is anything more to discuss.

I will end this by saying that the offensive post/troll meters are running high and the ban bat is at the ready.

If anyone has concerns or questions you can email me - admin@wauktalk.com or use the private messaging feature.

I have just joined this website and this thread in the interest of transparency.

I am the webmaster and sole owner of waukegancrew.org. It was funded solely by me.

I administrate the forum.

I support Barack Obama for President of the United States of America.

I have not decided on a candidate for Mayor of Waukegan.

Regarding the request for a first name, last name and phone number: I'm not calling anybody. I'm not selling information to anybody. We agreed on this course (myself, Steve, Kirsty and my husband Jason) simply to make sure that the people who joined were committed to doing the work involved. It is our objective to choose a mayoral candidate, based on the issues. Once we endorse a candidate, it is our intent to market this candidate as well as we can.

Steven Kolber has been a friend of mine for more than twenty years and I know he is a person of great integrity, as well as a great lobster chef. While we might not agree on everything, he and I both believe in the potential of this city. It is because of him I live here, on the same block as a matter of fact. I love my neighborhood, and my neighbors.

The postings on the blog, except for the original posting, are mine. If you disagree with anything I have written, or have any comments, please email me at vjblock@sbcglobal.net.

Let's get people voting... In my most recent blog posting, I mentioned that less than 25% of the registered voters in the Waukegan precincts made it to the polls in the April 2005 election. It would be an amazing accomplishment if we could double that number.

Great post! Thank you for not allowing those who fear freedom of expression to influence or undermine your forum which I see as an oasis in a free speech desert of a repressive city government and print media.
You have my appreciation for that and the forum in general. Thanks!
