Arrogance,Waukegan and the Internet

Interesting to note that when you sign up for WaukTalk you are presented with this completely different disclaimer:

As a user you agree to any information you have entered to being stored in a database. While this information will not be disclosed to any third party without your consent, neither “Waukegan Talk” nor phpBB shall be held responsible for any hacking attempt that may lead to the data being compromized.

Imagine that?

As I've pointed out, I did not have to give my name or my phone number or any other information when I signed up here, or at the now defunct TOWN website.

Now that's entertainment.

I'm not trying to dismantle anything. Just pointing out why some folks (myself included) might not join "crew." You're free to run your forum any way you see fit; if you want to reach a larger number of potential voters you might not want to turn them away at the door, so to speak.

Just my two cents. Smile

Hi Stevie,
I think you have perhaps misread the discourse on the Crew site. First, "The intent " means the intent of the whole endeavour, NOT the intent of one individual. Myself, Steve Kolber and everyone else associated with CREW are in the same boat as the rest of Waukegan's citizens. We all want/need to hear what the candidates have to say, just as much as the next person. Similarly, "Our sole task" refers to the Crew endeavour as a whole, not the sole task of myself and Steve Kolbers. It is like the proverbial royal "we".
Just to recap, "The intent" and "Our sole task" concern the whole, not the individual. I hope this clarifies any misunderstanding you may have. You are absolutely right that people vote for candidates for a number of reasons. It may well be that some people do not care to be informed on specific issues in order to vote. That is their choice. However, there are many individuals who do care, and for good reason. They want to ensure that the right sort of leadership is in place next February to turn the city around. Voting on the basis of race, gender, personality or the fact that someone is/isn't fecal matter works for some citizens, but - judging by the response we've had on the Crew site - most certainly not all. Sam **** - give me a break - I've been watching him since before he was sworn in as alderman so I know him well. There is nothing anyone, including Sam hisself, could tell me about him that would change my opinion of him. You can't negate years and years of the incompetent visionless low expectations that are Sam. Same thing goes for Hyde. There is no way I would ever vote for either of them for mayor..... even if the opposition was a turd.

The idea behind CREW is that citizens educate themselves. Citizens make an informed decision on their choice of candidate when they have had a chance to listen to ALL of the candidates. It really serves no purpose to offensively deride individual candidates; as well as being highly discourteous, it educates absolutely no-one.

Kirsty,
pardon me for being so bold but you need to read the posts of your co crew member Steve Kolber. Contrary to your more reasonable version, he, in supreme arrogant fashion, has said that:

“The intent is truly to educate the electorate as to the most qualified choice, and do what it takes as an organized and focused group to place that individual into office.”

And again, Steve, in full pomousity:

“Our sole task is to energize, enlighten and motivate the voters en masse to get behind a single qualified candidate who we feel has the passion, integrity and vision to lead our City”

I’m sorry but I don’t need an annoying putz like Steve Kolber to enlighten me let alone motivate me to get behind a candidate of his choosing.

Furthermore, there are many reasons people vote for a candidate. Being informed on specific issues is simply not that important to many voters here in Waukegan.

Seems to me that the doors open the same way, the choice to open them is what's different.

If you don't want to acknowledge that there's a big difference between giving your full name and telephone number and not giving it that's up to you. But don't try to BS the reader into thinking there is not a difference there.

Easy there Danno, just pointing out as Kellyann does, that the choice to participate is up to the individual.

Considering the CREW premise as described by Kirsty requires participation to go out and effect change once a candidate is identified, and that the members of CREW have already contacted and scheduled interviews with all of the candidates for Mayor to begin this process, asking for your name and number to help organize the effort does not seem too far fetched.

For those who want to participate in public discussion in a different capacity, there is WaukTalk. Both forums seem to be run on identical platforms as the overall disclaimers and options are the same, so the avenues for expression are similar.

Both sites allow you the opportunity to state your views, the level of participation is different, it is simply your choice.

Hi Jazmin, if you check the CREW site, http://www.waukegancrew.org, all the information is on there. Really hope you join us, you sound as though you are very motivated and want to change the city! Kirsty

Hi Danno,
I think most readers to this site are intelligent enough to figure things out for themselves. From a personal point of view, I'm not quite sure that I see what the fuss is about. My full name, telephone # and email address are required for multiple forums that I belong to; my son's school forum, membership of academic sites such as H-War, online journals, university library sites, archival databases etc etc I joined those sites becase I wanted to be a part of them; I made a cost/benefit analysis as to whether I could live with imparting my name, telephone # and email address in order to participate in something that interests me, end of story. I did not give these sites my bank account details, social security number, mothers maiden name, the names of my children, the alarm code to my house or the like. It's a simple, personal decision, no fuss required. Smile
