 Some of the bad proofing is the very reason I'm a tad angry at times that I can't get a job, despite the 4 years I put in to get a Graphic Arts Bachelor's Degree which covers this very kind of thing. All about a lack of "experience" or whatever that excuse entails. At least I know how to proofread the freaking English language! (And if I was being paid, I'd also have a dictionary and Strunk & White Elements of Style handy for those times of doubt.) C'mon folks!
I've also seen others doing newspaper work put black text on a dark background. Ok? Were they sleeping during the typography class that points out this is an obvious no-no. Easy to fix with white text and boosting the font-weight for bleed... But apparently idiots that ignore this concept have more experience than what would qualify myself.
I still don't think it's Mr. Foster or the local crew though (I did have a temp gig for a short bit at the end of Sunset there, where they do editing for the Waukegan/Lake County paper. So I got to know some people. But it was some short-lived IT data-logging assistance thing for network hiccups, and didn't shoehorn over to something where there would be better use of my skills.) As far as I know, a lot (if not all) of the web stuff is done in their main office in Chicago or the one in Plainfield. More of a Sun-Times News Group parent company kludge.
But I do know I could do a better job than whoever it is. Shame I can't get a job at it, despite the debt incurred for an education that should be an investment. (BTW, if anyone needs freelance work short of actually printing stuff don't hesitate to ask. Nudge nudge... )
