Police Layoffs
#11
ATTENTION, ATTENTION, ATTENTION, ATTENTION!

A public protest is planned to occur prior to and during the City Council Meeting on Monday, June 29th, 2009.

The meeting officially begins at 6PM, but organizers are asking participants to arrive as early as possible prior to the meeting to show support for the invaluable City of Waukegan employees. Organizers are encouraging early arrivals so that City leaders can see the show of support prior meeting.

Naturally, this is a peaceful protest...supporters are encoraged to bring signs/banners or other information showing their support for Waukegan staff.

We hope you will be able to join this movement against valuable position reductions within the City of Waukegan, IL.

I've got to believe that, during the Hyde administration, a good amount of "slackers" took root like a bad case of foot fungus in those departments. By "slackers" I mean highly paid, highly benefitted employees who produce very little. I've heard, from very good sources, that there are some in those departments who produce nothing and do nothing all day, day in day out. They merely show up to "work" every day and "skate" all day long. I'm all for trimming this from those departments. Time to clean house. Good riddance and sayonara.

Coincidentally, I've just heard that Link and Couvall are behind this protest. Orchestrated to turn people against Sabonjian and make him look bad. I wouldn't participate in it if they offered me $10.000... which just might happen yet.

I for one will be out there to support the police officers who are facing layoffs. From what I understand it is very hard to be a member in that department and merely "Skate" along. Regardless of how active those men and women are they must deal with things, people and situations that most would not likely do. I also understand that this town is not what it once was and would like to see it return to that but that will not happen if police officers jobs are cut. Or for that fact the jobs of many other city workers who have been or are facing layoffs. I might also add that irreagardless of who is behind and or supporting the protest it is up to the citizens to come and show support. This is not about making the mayor look good, bad or indifferent, its about making sure that if and when you ever have to call 911 somebody will be there to asnwer and more importantly respond.

Received word about 30 mins ago that the meeting scheduled for tonight has been Cancelled. From what I was told there was an issue about an emergency session of city council being closed to the public and therefore the meeting was called off. Also, for clarification, the source of the informal protest that was to be held had nothing to do with Link or Couvall for that matter. The protesters that were going to show up were going to be Waukegan Citizens and members of the multiple unions that are facing layoffs.

Just a quick update for those of you that are concerned about losing valuable members of your cities police and fire departments. Tomorrow, July 06 (Monday) at 6pm the city council is set to meet for their July meeting and to debate the most important topic of city layoffs. As part of that meeting, just prior to at 5pm Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran will be speaking publicly in support of the WPD with members of the WPD present. Also in attendence will be the firemen and their union representatives along with surrounding area fire dept members. From what I understand members of Waukegan Business Association and many community supporters will also be in attendence. If you have the time and are one of the regular visitors to this site, then you know how important these services are to our city and I urge you to come out and support these men and women.

I also found an interesting blog online, www.wauktowncop.blogspot.com, it was mentioned on the News Sun website previously and I looked it up. Its worth a few minutes of your time.

reasonable1, I'm with you. The city of Waukegan can not "afford" to lay off any of our valuable police and fire personnel. They already have a stressful job and I would assume this "threat" makes it more stressful. I will be at Monday's meeting and I hope that many more join us to support our public servants. God knows they make many personal sacrifices for our safety. I fear what Waukegan will become if this travesty is allowed to happen.

It not only saddens me, but makes me angry. I see greed is not just limited to the corporate world.

Think the aldermen will for go their salary and city paid benefits to help reduce the “deficit”?

Can someone confirm the schedule for us today?

Is Sheriff Curran still speaking outside at 5pm on behalf of the Waukegan police? Where will he speak?

When is the council meeting, at 8?

Is there some open discussion meeting at 6?

thanks

The police blog mentioned here says that; It also appears that the mopes are getting wind of the layoffs and manpower shortages as crime is increasing in normally quiet neighborhoods. That's all we need -more mopes from Chicago or elsewhere to come here because the pickings are easy. Read the police blog -they can't cover all of the calls now...

Just saw this link on the Drudge Report.

To confirm the schedule for todays protest: At 500pm the Police and Fire dept members will meet outside of the municipal complex where Sheriff Curran will speak (off of MLK). At 600pm the city council meeting is to start, and it must be an open session, expect the council chambers to be packed and furthermore, expect the council to go to executive session quickly. After all of the new/old business is discussed and the executive session is over there will be time for audience (public) comment and then aldermen comment. In most council meetings the public comment time begins about 8-830, it could be later tonight.
