The right to keep and bear arms simple, so some idiot doesn't infringe on my right to live. Ask Michael Jordan's father if he wishes he had a gun on him. You can't.

johnny99 Wrote:Ok one of the things I find amazing about history is how we love to look backward with 21st century eyes. So Im gonna throw this out there, most likely,as it would seem only common sense the founding fathers intended for us to stay armed for several reasons.Almost any statement is open to interpretation.... and so is the Bill of Rights. Your observation about looking back with 21st century eyes is a good one, one that I certainly wouldn't ignore, but the framers were not ignorant writers either. They knew about change. That is why they allowed for amendments to be made. Also there is no doubt whatsoever that the right to bear arms was granted, at least in part, to empower the people the means to protect themselves against a goverment that turned tyrannical. With that said, there should be no limitation of the type of "arms" the people have a right to bear. Automatic weapons, grenade launchers even atomic weapons should be available to the people via the local arms shoppe. Otherwise the whole concept of taking back a tyrannical government (who has these same weapons at it's disposal) would be undermined. Is there anyone who agrees with that view? And a quote from Thomas Jefferson - "The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." |
