Losing or Buying a Home? School Fair 10/18
#1
Well, no I'm not putting this in the wrong area. Waukegan Schools is sponsoring a Financial and Housing Information Fair (also an Immigration Services Forum) on 10/18 from 10 to 1 at Abbott Middle School.

We had discussions about this before. Should a school district offer help/information outside of it's scope? How many hats should it wear? Even board member Mrs. Mayfield-Jedkins said that we should stick to reading and writing when they were discussing the health clinic for the high school. I'm uncomfortable that the school is moving into offering financial advice.

The topics will include;

10:30 How to avoid housing discrimination and programs for first time home buyers

11:15 Your money, your life: How to handle your finances effectively

11:40 What to do to avoid losing your home: options for home owners

A rep from US Citizenship and Immigration Services will also be there to talk about pending cases.

Brings a lot of what ifs to mind. What if the conference gives wrong advice and our district is held liable. Who is paying for the free childcare? Who is paying for the building being open on a Saturday?

This information came home on a flyer with the school children. It was approved by the superintendent.

Warning: Although this information applies to most all of us the note says that "most sessions will be conducted in Spanish with an English translator available if needed."

Here is the person to call for more information or question why this is sponsored by the school. It doesn't say who she is affiliated with; her name was on the flyer.

Thought I'd add that the flyer says this event is organized by The Latino Advisory Board for Congressman Mark Kirk. The number is to his office.

Hey FedUp...I don't know for sure, but I highly doubt the school is "sponsoring" this event...my guess is they are merely using the facility (Abbott MS) for this event.

I meant that in a 'de facto' sense. The superintendent 'initialized' the flyer therefore, it is district approved and sponsored in my mind. The event is organized by a group from Mark Kirk's office. Some parent talked to me about it this week. She was upset that the schools were 'promoting' one candidate -Mark Kirk (in her eyes) over another. That such an event was at a school. And lastly, it was not in English.

They also let area churches use their buildings. Does that mean they endorse those churches?

Kirk has an event like this every year. Why is it a bad thing?

I don't know. You'd have to ask her.

But I don't think the event is questioned, rather should schools get involved in this area outside of children's education. Big Grin And I bet Dan Seals would have a thing or two to say about it!

You going?

In what capacity? Then I can answer that question. :geek:

Anything that gets parents ito a school in this district is a good thing. There are probably more parents showing up to a function like that then there are showing up to open house.

You've got a point there.... Smile The United Way had a good program for parent's and kids at the schools. Wish they'd have more programs like that going on.
