Opening day is almost here and I'm stocking up on caffene to keep me awake at the Genesse. With all of the changes over the summer my time could be better spent getting ready for the school year but nooooooo I have to sit through yet another over-priced, boring presentation at the Genesse. The District doesn't have money for necessary things like books, teacher salaries, field trips and all those other pesky academic things that benefit those pesky children but they have money to torture staff at the Genesse. Who is really benefitting from opening day ceremonies??? Maybe the over paid opening day consultant that, perhaps, is a friend of an administrator??? Not pointing fingers just wondering. Enjoy the last few days of summer the island (of misfit toys) will rise again soon.

I agree with you Brother or Sister "Just Me". My textbooks are falling apart. But I also see the Opening Day ceremonies a way to give us a chance to be united and meet as a group to celebrate the accomplishments of the schools and the staff as well. I really don't need to hear the long speeches from management , but It does give every staff member the oppotunity to meet our Union President and give us a charge for the new year. You have to admit, during a contract negotiation year, the necessity of the managment seeing this unity?

I dread opening day! So boring! Let us be int he classrooms and school meetings where administration can talk to us! Don't they see everyone in the seats using their phones, reading newspapers, talking etc? It's so uncomfortable in there as well!! Anyways, they don't know we are there! There's no checking or anything! Lot's of people in the halls waiting for it to end! A waste!

SKIP IT!!!! I did last year, even though my spouse went. And I wasn't the only teacher in the building. What's the point of listening to the same mumbo jumbo each year. The guest speaker always makes me hurl. I stayed at school and went through the transcripts of every one of my students so I could get an idea of who needed more of my attention to get them on the right track. I've got more important things to do.

No doubt! Why don't they have to suffer? They do the next day? What's with that?

Will the yet to be announced overpriced speaker get paid for TWO days so Washington and Glenwood staff can be bored too?

Virtually all jobs have required meetings that people would rather not attend. There are tons of teachers out there losing their jobs right now due to budget cuts, etc. Please be happy you have a job. I bet that there are people who would love to have your jobs, boring meetings and all, if offered the task. Cutting out this meeting will not get you the textbooks or repairs you need. Books have been falling apart and supplies have been limited for many years yet we still seem to be cranking out some kids with great educations. Its not what you have but what you do with it.
