Does anyone remember Kupperman's??

Hi guys! I don't know where to put this so I'm posting it here. Arby, maybe we could get a "chit chat" thread?

Anyhow, I found a beautiful jewelry box and underneath it, it's marked "Kupperman's Furniture Company, Waukegan Illinois". I've never heard of this company, and was just wondering if anyone remembers it and could give any info? Just curious....thanks!

I really don't remember the store, but I will always remember Karen Kupperman from high school, nice assets.

Have you called the Waukegan Historical Society's library? They have always been more than helpful to me when I had questions. I know they aren't there everyday, but if you leave a message they get back to you when they are in the office. I think the historical society also has a webpage and there may be some sort of contact on there. Check it out.

I bet you will have luck there! We went there once to find some information for a school project. The woman there was extremely helpful.

They also had all of the old high school annuals. I looked myself up.

Anyway, you'll be amazed at what they have. Check out the museum will there. Some great bird's eye view posters of old Waukegan.

I think Kuppermans was just where the old Salvation Army was across and down from Greentown Tavern.

Is it a cedar box about 12" wide with a picturesque scene on the top and a mirror on the inside? Pressed fake carving. Four feet, two handles on the side? Those are quite common. It was a give away... usually when someone bought a piece of furniture or other big ticket item. A lot of other companies also gave them away in slight variations. Sometimes they do not have the mirror inside or the picture on the top. I think they are mostly from the 1930's. They sell for about $15 to $30

One of the furniture stores in downtown Waukegan used to give high school girls a small cedar chest back in the sixties (when I got mine). I would imagine it was to encourage the girls to purchase their "hope" chests from them and eventually, when married, to purchase their furniture. Still in the mindset that when young ladies graduated from high school, that after a short time, they would be married and start a household. I am not sure if we received these as juniors or seniors BTW mine still sits on my dresser.
