1st IL swine flu case at Rogers Park school?, TX child dies
#11
totally agree with you that this is a great opportunity to evaluate all emergency plans.
let's hope that the new administration, in waukegan, handles this with more thought than the
water scare of a few weeks ago.

also, all parents, teachers, health care workers and care givers should insist on proper hygiene - at all times.

oh wait, that was another story the media used to scare everyone.

a little common sense and a lot of hand soap goes along way. let's all try it.

As a parent I am now officially worked up about this.

Swine flu cases mount
A 23-month-old Texas child has died from the swine flu, the first confirmed U.S. fatality from the disease, according to Dr. Richard Besser, the acting director of the Centers for Disease Control. "A child has died from the H1N1 virus," he said. "As a parent and a pediatrician, my heart goes out to the family." In Mexico, the outbreak is suspected in 159 deaths. developing story

Swine flu case closes Rogers Park school
April 29, 2009 5:48 AM | No Comments

A probable case of swine flu has prompted the closure of a North Side elementary school.

In an e-mail message this morning, CPS spokeswoman Monique Bond said the closure of Kilmer Elementary School, 6700 N. Greenview Ave., was "a result of the swine influenza." But she would not say whether the closure was precautionary or if there were one or more reported swine flu cases.

Contacted by the Tribune this morning, Chicago Public Schools chief Ron Huberman declined to comment.

A source confirmed the probable case to the Tribune. It was not known if it was a student, a teacher or some other staff member.

City public school and health officials will hold a 7 a.m. news conference to discuss Kilmer's closing. The school is in a heavily Hispanic populated area of the Rogers Park neighborhood.

Huberman and Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Terry Mason are attending the news conference, officials said.

Kilmer's student population of 850 is 60 percent Hispanic, according to latest figures available on the CPS Web site. It has a teaching staff of 46.

Mason said Tuesday there were no confirmed cases of swine flu in the city, but he expected that to change. He made the prediction based on what he's seen about the progression of swine flu elsewhere.

He said that with a case being reported in northern Indiana, it's only a matter of time before it hits locally.

"I expect we will have cases, but I don't know what that number will be," Mason said.

The first U.S. death from swine flu was confirmed today -- a 23-month-old child in Texas.

Mason said people should be on guard and take preventive measures such as constant hand washing with soap and water and boosting immune systems with water, vegetables and sleep. He said that officials are taking efforts to make sure that if the illness hits the area, it is contained.

According to the Associated Press, 159 deaths in Mexico could be related to swine flu. Seven of those people who died had the virus and the rest were suspected of contracting it.

In the U.S. nearly 70 confirmed cases have been reported.

It appears there is a case in Lake County. However, the Tribune says the 6 year old might not have been enrolled in school yet. Curious.

Possible swine flu case in Lake County

A probable case of swine flu has been identified in Lake County, state health officials announced Wednesday afternoon.

The case, involving a local 6-year-old from “East Central Lake County,” was one of nine probable cases statewide announced by Dr. Damon Arnold, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, at a press conference in Chicago early Wednesday afternoon.

Illinois Public Health Director Damon Arnold says officials are in daily contact with local hospitals and health departments and the state will receive additional anti-flu drugs from federal stockpiles this week.

Onset of symptoms for the child, who remains hospitalized, was April 24, according to Lake County Health Department spokeswoman Leslie Piotrowski. Piotrowski said she could not comment on whether the child had contact with anyone who had traveled to Mexico.

Health officials said that for a case to be classified as probable, testing has concluded that there is a 99 percent chance that the patient has swine flu.

Arnold said none of the nine cases appear to be severe.

Lake County Health Department activated an emergency operation center Wednesday afternoon at its administrative offices in Waukegan.

“The county has been on top of this,” County Board Chair Suzi Schmidt said Wednesday afternoon. “We have done drills on this. We know how to kick this into action.”

There is no vaccine available at this time for the current outbreak of the Swine Flu virus, so it is important for people living in the affected areas to take steps to prevent spreading the virus to others. If people are ill, they should stay at home and limit contact with others, except to seek medical care. Healthy residents living in these areas should take everyday preventive actions.

People who live in affected areas who develop an illness with fever (101 or higher) and respiratory symptoms, such as cough and runny nose, and possibly other symptoms, such as body aches, nausea, or vomiting or diarrhea, should contact their health care provider. Their health care provider will determine whether influenza testing is needed.

In addition to the Lake County case, other probable cases announced Wednesday included five in Chicago, two in Kane County and one in DuPage County.

The Lake County Health Department has activated a Swine Flu Hotline for county residents to obtain more information on the flu, including the signs and symptoms and how to remain healthy.

The Swine Flu Hotline number is: (847) 377-8350. Information is provided in both English and Spanish.

The Health Department urges residents to follow these recommendations, can help prevent any type of flu:

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

• Stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. Keep sick children at home. You will help prevent others from catching the illness.

• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Cough into the crook of your elbow. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it and wash your hands.

• Wash your hands often. Washing your hands and the hands of your children often will help protect you from germs. Use alcohol sanitizer as well.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

• Practice other good health habits — get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

9 probable swine flu cases in state, 3 schools close
April 29, 2009 6:08 PM | 43 Comments | UPDATED STORY

Three schools in the Chicago area have been closed as nine probable cases of swine flu were reported today by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The "relatively mild" cases include a 12-year-old girl at Kilmer Elementary School on Chicago's North Side. Chicago Public School officials said the school will be closed for at least two days.

Two of the other cases are in Kane County, where two schools are closing until Monday.

Chicago Public Health Commissioner Dr. Terry Mason discusses the city's response to possible swine flu cases during an afternoon news conference. (Terrence Antonio James/Chicago Tribune)

Rotolo Middle School in Batavia is being closed as a preventative measure. All activities and practices are canceled, as well. "Our first priority is the safety of our students, faculty and community," said Superintendent Jack Barshinger in a statement issued Wednesday.

Marmion Academy, a Catholic-Benedictine High School in Aurora, also has a probable case and is closed until Monday, said a spokesperson.

Neither school had any information on the students, due to confidentiality laws.

"The health department was acting with an abundance of caution," when it asked the schools to close, said Tom Schlueter, spokesman for the Kane County Health Department. At both schoools, there was a probable case of swine flu, coupled with a higher than average rate of absenteeism.

"This was a lot more than little Johnny's feeling sick," Schlueter said.

Both schools co-operated.

"The've been great. They're working with us and asking good questions," he said.

Schlueter said that future decisions to close schools, should further cases appear, will be made on an individual basis.

He could not provide additional information about the victims in the two cases.

Officials at all three schools are awaiting further lab testing at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Tests by the Illinois Department of Public Health found people who likely fell ill from the new flu virus in suburbs and city neighborhoods, including five in Chicago, one in DuPage County, two in Kane County and one in Lake County, ranging in age from 6 to 57.

The 12-year-old at Kilmer lives in Rogers Park, city officials said. The other probable city cases are: a 20-year-old man, also from Rogers Park; a 25-year-old man from Lake View; a 36-year-old woman from Woodlawn; a 35-year-old woman from Hegewisch.

In the suburbs, the cases were: a 27-year-old man in Elmhurst; an 18-year-old man in Geneva, in Kane County; a 12-year-old girl in Kane County; and a 6-year-old girl in Lake County.

At this point, there are no school closures in Lake County as a result of the swine flu. The probable case reported Wednesday involves a school-age child, but county health officials said there is evidence the child had not yet enrolled in a local school.

"It's very important to understand exactly what we're dealing with," said Illinois Public Health Director Dr. Damon Arnold, explaining that the situation bore no resemblance to the flu pandemic of 1918. "In 1918 we had no medications. ... We have emergency services systems we never had before."

"The name of the game is take your own pulse. Relax," Arnold said.

So far, officials have stuck to warnings about hand washing and limiting exposure to crowds, and have not expanded school closings beyond Kilmer Elementary School, 6700 N. Greenview Ave., in the Rogers Park neighborhood, where it seemed likely at least one student had the virus.

A proclamation by Gov. Pat Quinn freed up state assets to distribute medical supplies already on the way from U.S. Homeland Security stockpiles.

"We have to spend whatever is necessary to protect the public's health and safety," Quinn said at an afternoon news conference in Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications. "When it comes to public health, that's our top priority in government."

Illinois government officials began taking the precautions amid a flu outbreak that already has caused one death in Texas and 159 in Mexico and has sickened thousands of people in places as widely separated as Canada, New Zealand, Britain and Israel. Five new states announced Wednesday that they had confirmed cases of swine flu, bringing to the total number of states with confirmed cases to 10.

The rapid spread of the virus prompted school closings in Illinois, New York City, Texas, California, South Carolina, Connecticut, Minnesota and Ohio. Hard-hit Mexico had already suspended all schools until May 6. On Wednesday, Texas Gov. Rick Perry issued a disaster declaration and the state suspended high school sports competitions until May 11.

In Illinois, Cinco de Mayo festivals scheduled for this weekend were cancelled in Mundelein and at Navy Pier, organizers said.

"We decided that in order to keep everybody safe, we would go through the problem and cancel the event this year," said Eduardo Rodriguez, chairman of the Navy Pier event. Five months' planning and "a considerable amount" of money were lost in the cancellation, he said. "We're going to err on the side of caution and make sure that our community, at least, is safe."

Public health authorities said the virus has been spreading easily, but cases have rarely been fatal. There is no vaccine.

Officials around the world, faced with the extent of the outbreak and magnitude of public concern over it, took steps to limit the exposure wherever swine flu cases were confirmed or strongly suspected.

Illinois was taking no chances, while also urging the public not to panic.

Chicago Public Schools Chief Ron Huberman said school officials had been checking attendance rates at all its other schools today, looking for any drop in attendance greater than 5 percentage points.

"It's fluid. We are monitoring schools," he said.

School officials had been braced for the flu strain to raise its head as early as Sunday, when Chicago Public Schools headquarters reached out to the system's 680 principals.

Officials closed Kilmer Elementary School after attendance fell 9 percentage points on Tuesday. The school will remain closed at least through Thursday.

The decision to close the school was made Tuesday night after the state reported initial results of the probable swine flu case, Huberman said.

The Kilmer student population of 850 is 60 percent Hispanic. The school is also in a heavily Hispanic populated area of the Rogers Park neighborhood. The swine flu has taken its heaviest toll in Mexico.

A few parents tried to bring their children to Kilmer this morning but were turned away by staff handing out a flier, in English and Spanish, saying there had been a "confirmed" case of swine flu at the school.

Nevertheless, Chicago Public Schools spokewoman Monique Bond said the case remained probable and had not yet been confirmed.

Parents who live in the neighborhood and have children at Kilmer said they were concerned their children may have been exposed by children who were sick and should have been kept out of school.

Arlette Crawford, who lives near Kilmer, said her daughter, 5, is in preschool and was sitting next to a girl who was sick.

The girl's mother dismissed Crawford's concerns about her illness, she said. Two brothers, ages six and 7, and another girl, 8, had to go to the hospital with flu symptoms last night, she said.

Mason said there are no other suspected cases of swine flu at Kilmer. He said there are no plans to disinfect the school, stressing the problem is not with the building but with students infecting each other.

"It's children coughing, sneezing on each other," he said.

The first U.S. death from swine flu was confirmed today--a 23-month-old child in Texas.

Mason said Tuesday that people should be on guard and take preventive measures such as frequent hand washing with soap and water and boosting immune systems with water, vegetables and sleep. He said that officials are taking efforts to make sure that if the illness hits the area, it is contained.

President of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC)
<!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.alipac.us">www.alipac.us</a><!-- w -->

The elite defenders of President Obama and Janet Napolitano went into overdrive last week implying that anyone who was concerned about American borders being adequately secured or thousands of illegal aliens crossing our borders each night and bringing in the pandemic Mexican Flu along with other diseases is racist.

Crying racism has become the panacea of the elites who represent only a small minority with radical Open Borders views, who are attempting to control the vast majority of Americans, who have the wisdom to support securing the borders and opposing the new push for Comprehensive and Dream Act Amnesty for illegals in 2009.

The Open Borders Lobby (OBL), as we call them, have gone overboard again. The old beat the dead horse and play the worn out race card routine. Their false cries that a racist wolf is approaching the flock of sheeple mantra fills the media echo chambers.

The usual OBL suspects have quickly fired up their propaganda machines in an attempt to distort the simple message from ALIPAC, Judicial Watch, Michelle Malkin, Michael Savage, Pat Buchanan, retired Congressman Tom Tancredo, and Congressional leaders Duncan D. Hunter Jr. and Eric Massa, and many others.

DHS orders for our noble Border Patrol agents to face sanctions, if they wore surgical respirators to protect themselves while searching cars at the border, sent shock waves through Congress and the public! The public outcry resulted in an immediate reversal of the those orders and our agents are now allowed to wear the masks.

What is this grand threat of new and virulent racism that the Huffington Post, Boston Globe, Dallas Morning News, Raleigh News and Observer, Reuters, Shepard Smith of FOX, MSNBC, Keith Olberman of CNN, the National Council of La Raza, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the Associate Press all have risen to thwart?

It is the simple call for Obama and Napolitano to adequately secure America's borders, especially during the Mexican Flu outbreak and from the thousands of illegal immigrants crossing our open borders each night!

These liars are making false claims that ALIPAC called for the borders to be completely closed and for product shipments to be stopped.... never happened. These charlatans claim that securing the borders would have no impact in slowing the progression of the flu into America or protecting our citizens or hospitals... ludicrous. These unscrupulous traitors to our Republic claim "the horse is already out of the barn” and the burglar is already in the house (Obama and Shepard Smith). Hey Einsteins, did you fail to notice that millions more "horses" and "burglars" called illegal aliens are poised to rush through the door?

These politicians can't even call this virus by it's proper name, which is the 'Mexican Flu'. Truth, honesty and the safety of Americans are eagerly sacrificed on the altar of the Global Politically Correct religion. Pandemic flu and other viruses are traditionally named after the locations they were detected, thus the Hong Kong Flu, Asian Flu, Spanish Flu... Even the Ebola virus, Hanta virus, and Marburg virus were all named based on the geography of their discovery. The World Health Organization has named the pandemic Mexican Flu yet our President is such a liar that he can't say the words 'Mexican Flu', without engaging in the "language of prejudice."

Let me assure you folks that if American doctors and engineers acted this way, millions of us would be dead within a year. You can't fight pandemics, illegal immigration, or any threat, if you can't even speak clearly and accurately about the diagnosis or situation.

Obama's failure to adequately secure our borders, even during a crisis, is waking Americans up to the fact that Obama is on the same Globalist script as Bush on immigration and many other issues.

In the minds of Americans, it should not take a pandemic for this to happen, after all the US Constitution says all states shall be protected from invasion. It states that Presidents are to enforce the existing laws of Congress, not create and ignore laws through executive fiat, as we have seen with Bush Obama (BushObama).

These Open Borders Obama defenders are engaging in their Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) by attacking the messengers, playing the straw man defense, and by flat out lying.

They are defaming those of us that speak out for secure borders claiming we are targeting or blaming "immigrants", or targeting and blaming Mexico or Mexicans! A simple review of the actual comments of those who are being attacked reveals that none of these claims were made.

So why are the OBLs lying and distorting the truth?

The answer is simple. They know that a large majority Americans agree with the positions of Tancredo, Savage, Malkin, ALIPAC, Judicial Watch, and most of our talk radio show hosts in the country on immigration! They can't win in a fair political fight, so each of them goes for the kick below the belt!

In truth, groups, leaders, and talk show hosts who represent the American public on immigration issues, much better than Obama and many of the Washington insiders, are sounding an alarm that is waking the sleeping giant of the over 200 million Americans who want the borders adequately secured!

Proof of that arrived on May 4 when Rasmussen polling showed 63% of Americans "believe the border with Mexico should be closed until the swine flu epidemic is under control."

In truth, Obama and Napolitano's refusal to adequately secure American borders, during the flu pandemic outbreak in Mexico threatens to derail the new Amnesty push in 2009, as well as, the entire plan to force Americans into a population and economy merger with Mexico and Canada, without Congressional or citizen mandates!

The arrogance and overconfidence of the Obama administration dwarfs the political intoxication of the Democrats, after the 1992 elections setting the stage for massive change in Washington in 2010 if Republicans can get Bush, McCain, and Graham to sit down and shut up.

This past week, I have received a flood of calls and e-mails from concerned citizens, who describe themselves a Democrats, liberals, and former Obama supporters. Obama's Open Borders and pro-Amnesty positions are resulting in lost support among Democratic voters and lawmakers. Americans are coming together to stand and speak out as one across party, racial, and political lines against the DC insiders.

One key witness to the coming change is Scott Rasmussen of Rasmussen reports. Rasmussen is one of America's top pollsters and his recent reports indicate some enlightening news. First, over seventy five percent of Americans do not feel that the current status quo in Washington represents "We The People" of the United States. Second, the Presidential tracking numbers indicate that Obama's approval ratings have steadily fallen since his inauguration, while his disapproval ratings have steadily risen. As of May 3, the graphs of the polling data have statistically converged with only 35% strongly approving of Obama's performance while 32% strongly disapprove.

The failure to secure our borders, the scandalous Department of Homeland Security documents distributed to police officers which painted tens of millions of Americans, including our veterans, as domestic terrorists are taking their toll on Obama!

Janet Napolitano does not seem to be able to open her mouth without saying something offensive and asinine.

Some of the latest propaganda "leaked" from her department says you might be a domestic terrorist threat, if you are one of the over 77% of Americans opposed to licenses or in-state tuition for illegal aliens. I wish I was joking, but it is true that the Department of Homeland Security has now warned police that the over 200 million Americans who hold these views might want to harm police or the government. The ironic thing is that no group opposing licenses or in-state tuition for illegals, like ALIPAC, has ever been in trouble with the law.

Americans are waking up to the fact that Obama is NOT a man of the people, but just another Globalist puppet whose real job is to lie to us all, for as long as possible, while our nation is taken from beneath our feet!

The battle to save America is in full force. The Obama administration is drunk on their new power in the Senate. He has initiated their pursuit of the three nation breakers! They are making aggressive moves designed to silence free speech on the web and talk radio, abridge second amendment rights, and to turn 15 million illegal aliens into voters who will break America forever and destroy any hopes of future borders or immigration enforcement!

These three steps, likely combined with even more draconian police state measures, are deemed essential to force Americans into the complete submission and slavery that will be necessary to bring the North American Union and larger Global governance plans into being.

The battle to secure America's borders goes to the heart of America's very existence as a Republic. Our self-governance is at stake and the self-governance of American citizens is essential to our prosperity, security, and freedoms. All of which will be lost to us, if "We The People" are not masters of our own national destiny.

The highest media powers in America are playing deep defense today as the growing chorus of leaders, groups, and citizen activists arise to challenge and thwart the plans of BushObama.

America, you might get one more chance to set things right and save our nation in the elections of 2010, but only if enough of you heed the call to arise to our generation's greatest challenge and hold Washington at bay for six more months!

Six months from now the 2010 elections will take center stage and the Washington insiders who have betrayed the American public will back off of their highly unpopular agendas to protect their cherished positions on the Washington gravy train.

The clock is ticking on what may become America's final hours.

The future is still yours to decide.

But only an historic and immediate political uprising can stop those bought and paid for with the gold of our nation's enemies from bringing America to an end and taking the world into a post-American era where the suffering of a majority of Americans will increase to horrific levels.

Illinois leads nation in swine flu cases

Illinois leads the nation in the number of confirmed swine flu cases, but health officials say it's nothing to be alarmed about.

Illinois far surpassed any other state, with 225 confirmed cases of H1N1 flu Wednesday.

Part of that may be due to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention authorizing Illinois over the weekend to do tests to confirm swine flu cases. Not every state has such authority, and it was granted in part because the Illinois Department of Public Health previously gave employees training in CDC procedures to test the related avian flu, state spokeswoman Kelly Jakubek said.

Illinois may also have many cases, Jakubek said, because Chicago is a transportation hub with a high population.

The cases here remain mild comparable to common seasonal flu.

Because of that, the state recommended that schools with students who have swine flu stay open unless there is a high rate of illness, but that sick students stay home for a week until they're no longer contagious.

The state also reported 20 probable cases of swine flu for a total of 245.

Chicago had 102 of all cases, suburban Cook County 59, DuPage 27, DeKalb one, Kane 21, Kendall two, Lake five, McHenry two, Will 15, and Winnebago four.
