Waukegan boys get chance to make big splash

Waukegan's School Board voted 4-2 on Tuesday to reinstate a boys swim team at the high school.
The move came a month after the board, responding to a petition calling for boys swimming, asked athletic director David Perkins to conduct a survey of both high-school and middle-school students to gauge interest in the sport.
Superintendent Donaldo Bautiste told the board that the results showed "sufficient student interest in adding the sport," and he proposed the spending of $21,740 from contingency funds to get a program started for the coming winter season.
Boys swimming was cut with girls badminton and boys tennis in June 2001 as the district trimmed athletics costs by $200,000. Badminton has since been reinstated, but Waukegan High still does not have a boys tennis team.
According to district officials, the most recent survey had 34 male students list swimming as their top choice for participation in sports.
A team will be assembled to compete this school year.
In high school, boys swimming is a winter sport and the season will start soon.
