There are tons of teachers out there losing their jobs right now due to budget cuts, etc. Please be happy you have a job. I bet that there are people who would love to have your jobs, boring meetings and all, if offered the task. Cutting out this meeting will not get you the textbooks or repairs you need. Books have been falling apart and supplies have been limited for many years yet we still seem to be cranking out some kids with great educations. Its not what you have but what you do with it.Why
If cutting out the opening day fiasco won't help fund new books and supplies what will happen to that money? The District never has money for supplies that teachers request but they do find funding for boring speakers, lunches at Lincoln Center, sending countless administrators to off-site meetings, remodeling areas that students don't go to and.......... Why not give teachers the choice of attending the Genesse "Extravanganza" or working in their classrooms? That would be a way to finally put this discussion to rest by finding out how many people choose each option. Last years presentation was supposed to be a fun way to start the year, the speaker was humorous but didn't provide any information that would help in the classroom, the speeches were the same old thing...welcome back-we are happy you are back-it will be a good year-we appreciate you..bla bla bla, so no one would miss anything relevant to teaching.
