The Mexican bakery is a community store where Armando Trejo Jr. knows or recognizes most of his customers -- and that includes the man he shot in the chest during a robbery.
Police said Demitrius Newbill, 29, came into the Waukegan bakery Monday evening asking Trejo for a pen and paper, and handed him a note that read: "Give me the money I have a gun."
Trejo took money out of the register and handed it to Newbill. Trejo said he shot Newbill when he moved what he thought was a gun under his shirt.
Newbill was charged Tuesday with aggravated robbery.
