A vicious gang attack left two Prospect Heights residents in the hospital this weekend.

Prospect Heights Police arrested and charged Julio Cruz, 18, of the 4900 block of Algonquin Parkway, Rolling Meadows, and Ranferi Vasquez, 27, of the 9300 block of Western Ave., Niles, with two counts of aggravated battery great bodily harm.

At 1:47 a.m. May 9, police responded to a fight in progress at 854 Piper Lane, Prospect Heights. The two victims were lying in the street and were transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital by Prospect Heights Fire Department personnel, police said.

Police said witnesses saw four males and one female get out of a red pickup truck and beat the two victims with golf clubs and kick them once they were on the ground. Witnesses also saw the pickup truck had one window that was smashed out.

Prospect Heights Police found and stopped a red pick up truck fitting that description a short distance away from the fight scene with four juveniles and Cruz and Vasquez inside. All five suspects were arrested.

Police said upon questioning Cruz and Vasquez admitted to being members of a street gang and were driving though various areas to find members of a rival gang.

Police said while driving down Piper Lane, the suspects were making gang gestures to people on the street when an unknown object broke the passenger's-side window of their truck.

Cruz and Vasquez then grabbed the golf clubs from the rear of the truck and began to beat and kick the two victims, police said.

Both victims are in critical condition, one with a broken jaw, broken nose and broken left orbital socket and bruising on the brain. The second victim received large lacerations to the head, neck and arm requiring several staples to close the wounds.

The victims were not affiliated with any street gang, police said.

The juvenile offenders also were charged. Two juveniles were held in custody and taken to the Juvenile Detention Facility and two were released to their parents.
