WAUKEGAN -- A teacher who works at two different Waukegan public schools has come down with a confirmed case of H1N1 (swine) flu, according to statements released by District 60 officials on Friday.
"We have been informed that there is a confirmed case of H1N1 (swine) flu in an itinerant teacher who serves at Greenwood Elementary and Jefferson Middle School," read a statement posted at the district's Web site, www.wps60.org.
The statement added that "the teacher will be recovering at home," and district schools will remain open, on the recommendation of guidelines set by the Lake County Health Department and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"School closure is not advised for a suspected or confirmed case of novel influenza A (H1N1)," said the statement, "and, in general, is not advised unless there is a magnitude of faculty or student absenteeism that interferes with the school's ability to function."
A different statement, sent home with district students Friday afternoon, advised that "a confirmed case (has been) identified in our community," and added that no school closures are planned.
"We now expect this flu to be similar to the seasonal flu that we experience each year," the statement read.
District officials added that students, faculty or staff "with influenza-like illness (fever with a cough or sore throat) should stay home and not attend school or go into the community except to seek medical care for at least seven days, even if symptoms resolve sooner."
Also on Friday, the Illinois Department of Public Health reported eight confirmed H1N1 cases in Lake County out of 393 in the state.
Waukegan is the second school district to report a case, following two that were reported this week affecting students in North Shore School District 112.
