New hurdle for DUI suspects
Daily Herald Staff Report

Published: 12/26/2008 12:01 AM | Updated: 12/26/2008 1:03 PM

First-time drunken-driving suspects will find life to be more difficult after Jan. 1.

That's when a new state law takes effect requiring a breath alcohol ignition interlock device to be installed for first time DUI suspects.

Anyone who wants to continue driving while fighting a DUI charge must obtain a monitoring device permit allowing them to be behind the wheel during license suspension.

The gizmo also must be installed in the suspect's vehicle. The new law requires people to take a breath test every time they want to start their vehicle and at periodic intervals after the engine has been started.
