Not too much about this organization. This did come up though. (I wonder if they are supporting a candidate?)

Date: 09/21/2008

School Board President June Maguire
Dr. Donaldo R. Batiste, Superintendent
Waukegan Community Unit District 60
1201 North Sheridan Road
Waukegan, Illinois 60085

Dear Mrs. Maguire and Dr. Batiste,

My Name is Porfirio Garcia. I am a resident and business owner here in the Waukegan
area. I am the owner broker of Exit RelGar Realty Inc. .I am also a member of
Waukegan Leadership Council and Waukegan Association for youth soccer, Where we
represent over 1100 children from the city ofWaukegan.

As a participant in various organizations 1 programs that evolve around discipline and
education. I believe that education is the responsibility of a whole community and of each
one of us. As a community we should be insuring the education of our children and be
active participants witmn our school districts.

From a business perspective: better schools attracts better business, A good school
district attracts more activity in the real estate industry, better opportunities for
development and business growth and ultimately a more progressive and safer
community for our children and everyone of us.

Better schools equals better home values,... I am sure we can all relate to this,...
If the school District suffers,... so does the value of our homes. v
If the School District Suffer, So does your community and your neighborhood.
I believe that what Lake County United proposes is a piece of a puzzle long overdue. We
need to put our kids into college and higher education. Our belief system should not be
"IF our kids go to cotlege", But "When and Where they should be going to college".
I am in support Waukegan college preparatory Academy.

This looks like a very interesting group. I look forward to the debate.

2008 Grantees

Waukegan Leadership Council protects the welfare of immigrant and Latino residents in a city that is predominately Latino from current immigration policies of indiscriminate arrest, detainment and deportation through voter registration, education and building collaborations with non-immigrant communities of color. $3,000 (Seed)

The Get Out the Vote Coalition (GOTV) is proud to present our campaign, simply "Vote." YWCA Lake County, the Lake County Clerk's office, the League of Women Voters, College of Lake County, Citizen Action Illinois, NAACP North Chicago, Waukegan Leadership Council, the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute, and the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights have banded together to promote registration activities and voting awareness particularly in communities that are either in need of empowerment or are least likely to vote:

* Young people between the ages of 18 and 34
* African Americans
* Latinos
* Naturalized citizens
* Young, unmarried women

I suspect they'll be pushing for Guzman. Waukegan Leadership Council formed originally to fight 287G. And wasn't is Guzman with his finger in Hyde's face
during that time?

We shall see. I have heard all of the candidates (except Hyde) speak about their plans and visions for Waukegan if elected. With all due respect Mr. Guzman came across as the least experienced, had no clear vision, and contradicted himself. It appeared that he had one agenda and that was to stop the 'police harassment' of 'his people', to rescind the 287g application and to stop code enforcement from going into homes. When asked about his plans to enhance our economy and other specific questions he kept saying that 'we should hire experts like they have in Libertyville.'

This was a couple of months ago. So perhaps his handlers have groomed him and brought him up to speed. But I would be very disappointed in the Waukegan Leadership Council if they are backing Mr. Guzman for the obvious reasons. Having heard 5 out of the 6 candidates I can categorically say that he is not the best choice to lead this city.

And yes, Mr. Guzman did point his finger in Mayor Hyde's face. I witnessed this in person at the council meeting. The picture made the front page of the News Sun. After a brief terse conversation they did actually shake hands but... I can post what proceeded this if anyone wants to know.

cheap shot fintan.
If I was the mayor I wouldn't want to be around someone with a history of putting his finger in my face!

it was not a cheap shot, it is a statement of fact!! in the recent past the mayor has made commitments to speak and at the last moment cancelled without explanation or rescheduling. he has allowed people to believe it had to do with his recent health scare, when actually these cancellations occurred a month before his illness.
it had nothing to do with a finger in the face, i do not know anything about that.

I would stay away from this group. Obviously, a group with its own very specific agenda. We want to attract more taxable residents and businesses and create a community of strivers and achievers and not "mob rule" type groups who want to disrupt our progress.
