Terry Link slipping away
#1
Hopefully the embarrassing last place finish of Senator Terry Link in the Lt. Governor primary race is a positive sign that he is losing the once perceived iron grip of the democratic machine in the region.

He and his henchmen have done nothing but serve themselves locally for the last decade without any repercussions. Perhaps there is a rising star out there that can use this recent crushing defeat to galvanize the masses to defeat Senator Link when his state senatorial seat is up for grabs.

WHAT A SORE LOSER!!
(From the Daily Herald)

Link, about to start his 14th year in the Senate, had 98,735 votes, or 12 percent of the total. He said he was disappointed by the results.

"I ran for this office because I wanted it, it's something I've thought about for some time," he said. "It's disappointing to see how it all turned out."

Link then blasted Cohen, the apparent winner in the Democratic race, for trying to "buy an election." Cohen spent nearly $1 million on the race, while Link spent less than a quarter of that.

"I'll be honest, it looks like campaign finance reform means nothing in Illinois," he said. "The race is being led now by someone who's unqualified for the job, but decided he'd buy his way in. That will make things tough for this party in November."

Of course that explains why an electrical worker from Elmhurst also beat him. The fact of the matter is Terry Link cannot face the fact that he is completely inept and basically unknown outside the North Avenue democratic HQ in Waukegan.

Don't flog me...but according to the Tribune, Terry received 99,972 votes. I realize it wasn't enough to win...but come on folks...how many votes could "you" get in a state-wide race?

I congratulate Waukegan's own Terry Link for making a run at a higher office and wish him luck with whatever path he chooses next.

99,972 is nothing to sneeze at. Good try Terry!

No comments from the peanut gallery necessary...just let me speak my peace.

LOL.."but come on folks..how many votes could you get in a state-wide race?"

Enough to win, that's how many ! Link knew the Lt Governor race was a state-wide race, had endorsements from big-time Democratric players all
over the state, from numerous Democratic County Chairman to current State Senators to former State Senators to winning the endorsement statewide
of the AFL-CIO.

Link spend well over at least $100K, was campaigning all through the state, from Southern Illinois to Central Illinois to Northern Illinois....so Link was working to win. Yet he came in at the very bottom, fourth out of four, as seen here (source..Illinois State Board of Electons):

Democratic primary votes for Lt. Governor:
Cohen 212,902 26.0%
Turner 182,432 22.3%
Hendon 113,273 13.8%
Boland 105,551 12.9%
Castillo 105,056 12.8%
Link 99,972 12.2%

Elections are not like "horeshoes"....somewhat close is not close enough. It takes more than the other candidates to win, and Link was 102,931 votes from winning.

Well said; you make very many valid points.

How can someone who only had approx. $350,000 in his coffier out-advertise someone with $3,000,000? Cohen won this race because he could afford to buy ad time on TV & radio...and his commercials were well done. I was ready to go get a job with "Scott Lee Cohen," since this was the only thing his commercials focused on...they were obviously very effective.

But look a little closer...Cohen was the only person running ads with such gusto. He was "sure" to win, as he was in our faces the entire time. America, with a few exceptions, has become a society of lemurs...following around the person in front of them and doing what they do. Politics is America is disappointing...and it's only going to get worse.

Terry Link my be seen as a hometown good-ole-boy, but I personally give him props for trying. I don't see anyone else in Waukegan sticking their necks out for a higher office. Is he perfect? Of course not. Is anyone? Of course not.

Good try Terry. Thanks for running a clean campaign. There are many who are proud of you and what you have brought to Waukegan.

Now...what to do with Cohen. Poor democratic party...they're f****d if Cohen stays on the ballot.

Well....Terry Link did not win as Lt. Governor, so that is that.

Now you are so right about Scott Lee Cohen. What a total disaster is he.

IF Cohen remains on the ballot, he will shipwreck not only Quinn in November,
but Alexi Giannoulias for U S Senator vs Mark Kirk...and it will be a total embarassment for not
only the people of Illinois but for the President of the United States as well...
and the Democratic National Committee.

Cohen I think will throw the towel in .. the pressure will be enormous from all kinds
of heavy players, including U S Senator Durbin and even The White House.

The State Central Committee may then meet to appoint a replacement, which should
go to Art Turner, who won second place in the Dem Primary for Lt Governor.

Quinn said that the people should have the opportunity to select a Lt. Governor, however..
so who knows, a special election could be held.

Also, another angle would be for the General Assembly to vote and abolish the Office
of Lt Governor prior to the November 2010 General Election.

All kinds of possible scenarios; a special election would be quite costly, abolishing
the Office of Lt Governor would be seen as too arbitrary and capricious.

So I suspect the mostly likely solution will be to force Cohen OUT and then the State Central Commitee
select Art Turner to be the Dem Candidate for Lt Governor (since again he came in number
two in the Dem Primary).

Time well tell....never a dull moment in Illinois politics, lol ... the best show in town !

Giannoulias will be an embarassment for Illinois. A mobbed up former party boy who thinks he can fool all the people, all the time. You never change, do do you L?
