This is exactly why teachers need tenure! So they dont have to bend over for Principals and administrators who are trying to force grades on undeserving students. Wow...just more bad press coming out of the school.

Yea and who's got the STUDENTS' backs when they (all too often) get stuck with lousy, burnt-out or just plain criminal teachers? The administration? NO. The union? HELL NO. Their parents? Yea, good luck to them trying to get anything done with that cesspool on Sheridan.

Can't say much about the last post because I have met teachers I believe are burnt out and should leave the profession.
Luckily, most of us are not. Most of us want to help students to be successful, caring, and useful members of society. I certainly do. I do not fail more students now than I did when I started teaching many years ago. But the students reacted different to my style of teaching years ago. When I told them I cared about their success, and would do everything in my power to help them, they listened and responded. It was not uncommon for a student who failed me one year to personally ask to be placed in my class again. The second time around was a success. But in the last three years, I've had little success with motivating my students without getting their parents involved. And when I try to get the parents involved, I'm either ignored, or the parents tell me the teachers are ganging up on them, or that they can't tell their child what to do because they are old enough to make their own choices. But I remind you that the students that I have problems with are the ones who are repeating the class for the second, third, or fourth time. What I want is for the administration to stop making us feel like we're failing all the kids. What I want is for the administration to start targeting these kids who are failing most if not all their classes and work more closely with them and their families. I'm sick of being told that "I" have to fix the problem. I am one person. I can start the process, but we need to work as a community to help these kids. When we do that, and stop focusing on what teachers are failing more than 20% of their students, we will begin to fix the problem.

No about the tenured issue! Lol! Yes, there are several teachers who are burned out and need to go! I know, I work with several! However, teachers need tenured as protection! As someone else stated, many teachers are afraid to voice their opinion when they are not tenured, being afraid of being dismissed! However, many teachers earn the tenured status! Even the burn outs earned it, the Principal must thought so when they granted it to them! This willbe my 2nd year with tenure and I don't plan on being burned out as these other teachers are! Even though a teacher has tenure, this doesn't fully protect them, doesn't allow them freedom to do whatever! Principals can get these teachers out if they put in the effort! As a tenured teacher, I would be willing to sacrifice my tenure each year if they up the pay! Yeah, yeah, it's not about the money, but if they got rid of tenure and increase the pay more between school years, I am pretty sure teachers will work harder! But for those who feel teachers aren't working hard enough, please remember, there are many teachers who are working really hard! There are teachers throughout the district at all levels, at all subjects core and not, that are working very hard!! There are those who try to make your children successful and those who do care about them and the city of Waukegan!!

Well OhBrother, I'm sure that's not your name either so your hiding yourself! When several people have stated that this is happening at the hs, well perhaps that should be enough to believe that this happening! You can have your doubts, perhaps you don't want to believe what is actually happening! Perhaps you work at LC or adminstration at the hs. With how the district is ran, ghost payroll, budget cuts, unjust firings, firings based on the persons sex, new jobs created cause they are friends of someone, people losing jobs just so friends can have that job, well perhaps if you were a teacher you would also hide on the boards! I think if any of us had no choice but to use our real names, these boards would be bare and not to many of us would post!

My children's future are presently at the hands of teachers of Waukegan High. I do expect high standards from everyone involved. Please substantiate your claims to me, as I am sick of the mediocrity that is Waukegan Schools. I do not fear fighting for kids, it is an honorable battle. You all keep making these allegations and expect someone to fix your problems for you. How about you take a stand and use your precious tenure to protect you when you come forward. Or do you expect the readers here to do your dirty work while you have your summers off and we continue to work to pay taxes for your salary. That is IF we haven't been laid off yet from our jobs.

You say we haven't dealt with the issue and we are hiding. Well some of us have and we are not hiding through the boards, we are sharing our info! Myself and others have tried to deal with this issue. I went to my department chair and they replied this happening all over the school. I went to my union rep and said it's not an union issue, more of a building issue. With that I did talk to someone higher up and they simply said to "do it." So, I could keep the grades and if something happens to my position then I can fight it with the union. But like you said, with the economy, we can't afford to take the chance! It's easier said then done, specially if you don't work at the hs!
Not looking for an argument, just sharing the info! You may not believe that this is going on, but it is! Cheers! |
