Seriously - WTF? Is this guy insane?
Another candidate
The News-Sun editorial in the June 18 edition mentions two possible job candidates to replace Waukegan Mayor Robert Sabonjian on the Lake County Board. Let me cast light on a third: Mark Drobnick.
I first expressed interest May 6 in an e-mail to Mayor Bob, copied to his wife, including an addendum to my resume. Then, I learned more about the selection process, and County Board Chairman Schmidt. So, in mid-May, I sent her a couple of e-mails, on a related topic, my "political experience."
As for Sen. Link, I must state that despite our differing views on some issues, I genuinely admire him. This stems from what are his beginnings and formation, style, capacity to empathize with people, goodness of heart, team spiritedness and "being on top of his game." His leadership ability is evident.
All of his public policy opinions deserve serious consideration, before joint decisions are taken. I think, on balance, that he is a local resource who works to the positive benefit of Lake County.
Mayor Bob recently has declared an interest in the elimination of partisan primaries from the Waukegan political landscape, as is the practice in other cities. If the prime purpose of his initiative is not simply to wrest political power from opposing blocs, then it should be well-intentioned.
The non-partisan way seems to be a short-term saver for taxpayers. But, at what ultimate cost? Is it a question of system or the people?
What happens, say in 20 years, when a new bunch is in office? Would the climate be "catholic" or have turned into a "cult?"
Like the Founding Fathers sought, best is to have in place a way of doing things that's optimal for good government, regardless of whom the particular players might happen to be, in any given decade or century.
Mark Drobnick
