I ran across this neat free and open source software for making beats, tunes, and various noises. It's basically a "poor-man's FruityLoops" and supposedly works in a similar manner. Not to mention that it comes fairly well loaded with included synthesizers, samples, and effects. So what is this software? It's called Linux Multi-Media Studio. But don't let the Linux part of the name scare ya, if that's not the OS you're using. It also comes in Win32 and Win64 builds. I know it works fine on XP. (Dunno if there's an OS-X one yet.)
You can find out more about it and the download at: http://lmms.sourceforge.net
And two examples...

Don't be afraid to give it a try and post any of your own creations. I'm sure you can do better than anything I've made with it so far. (Particularly if you have a MIDI setup. The QWERTY hack for music input isn't exactly the best thing - that goes for any software though, not just LMMS.)
Have fun!
