Chicago Gun Ban Axed After Violent Weekend: At Least 29 Shot, 3 Dead In Weekend Shootings

On Monday, the Supreme Court upheld a challenge to Chicago's 28-year-old handgun ban, which ultimately signals the end of the ban on handguns in Chicago and Oak Park. As gun rights were extended throughout the country by SCOTUS, Chicago was recovering from another violent weekend that left at least 29 shot and three dead.

Even with the gun ban in place, shootings in Chicago have been rampant. Last weekend, at least 52 were shot and ten killed in just three days, and this weekend the gunfire continued. According to CBS, shots were fired into a group of about 30 people Sunday night--likely a crowd gathering in Uptown after the Gay Pride Parade. Two men were wounded in the incident, at least one suffered serious injuries.

CBS reports that another rash of shootings occurred between 10:45 p.m. Saturday and 4 a.m. Sunday, where at least 13 people were shot and one person was killed. Most of the incidents took place on the Northwest and Southwest sides.

From midnight to 6 a.m. on Saturday, another 13 people were shot--two fatally, the station reports.

When the Supreme Court ruled Monday (read the entire decision here), they did take these violent weekends into account. From the Supreme Court decision:
Quote:Chicago Police Department statistics, we are told, reveal that the City's handgun murder rate has actually increased since the ban was enacted and that Chicago residents now face one of the highest murder rates in the country and rates of other violent crimes that exceed the average in comparable cities.

Monday's decision did not explicitly strike down the Chicago area laws, ordering a federal appeals court to reconsider its ruling. But it left little doubt that they would eventually fall.

The court did, however, explain that the decision does allow states to continue regulating handgun use, writing that the decision "limits (but by no means eliminates) their ability to devise solutions to social problems that suit local needs and values."

Mayor Daley, expecting the Supreme Court to rule the way it did today, told the Associated Press last week that he had no intention of going down without a fight.

"We're not going to roll over," Daley told the AP, adding that he plans to put in place all sorts of restrictions to make it tougher to buy guns and easier for police to know who has them.

"Just like they did in Washington, D.C., the city of Chicago is going to try to make it as difficult and discouraging as humanly possible to keep people from having guns in their homes for personal protection," Dave Workman, spokesman for the Bellevue, Washington-based Second Amendment Foundation said.

Chicago Reader reporter Mick Dumke wrote Monday that Daley and his allies in the City Council could "act as soon as this Wednesday with legislation designed to curtail handgun access, potentially including regulations on licensing and sales as well as training requirements."

Hopefully, we will have a new governor and state legislature that will enact conceal/carry and castle doctrine laws that will free up our municipal police departments to concentrate on low level public disorder laws. I am perfectly capable of defending myself in my home and in public, if I am given the right to do so. How about you? Did you know that most elected officials have the right to carry a concealed firearm? Why do they reserve that right only to themselves?

Believe it or not the prevalence of people getting shot and people shooting in Chicago or any other city for that matter has little to do with guns. The propensity for firearm related violence and other types of violence are mainly due to the widespread glorification and acceptance of violence in general in this country. Firearms just happen to be a convenient way to be violent. We are at the mercy of those who think like ClassicalLib17, who fail to see this truth.

The only thing greater than the prevalence of people getting shot is the prevalence of stupidity.

The fact that our society glorifies violence, and then when violence does occur, the people are shocked or surprised that it has indeed occurred is absolute proof of an insane society. Yes, I know. It's hard to accept that our society is insane. Do you like it that way?

A good analogy is the ants and sugar one. If i spill some sugar on my kitchen floor is it an effective solution to kill the ants and then wait until more come and kill them and so on and so on... or is it more effective to clean up the sugar?

We have a society that creates violent people. We need to take the steps that are necessary to stop doing that.

I don't glorify violence, nor does most of our society. Hollywood glorifies violence. Don't confuse the two. Our Founding Fathers profoundly understood God-given rights for the people and the necessary limits on Federal government power in our Constitution. They were brilliant men who stepped forward and laid their lives on the line, literally, in difficult times. Please don't portray their substantial contribution as outdated. The fact that you disagree with the wisdom put forth by our Founding Fathers is merely a reflection of your upbringing and current state of mind, rather than what is best for a free people. 223 years and counting.

It also states that some people decide to live like 223 years ago...

I wonder Classic, when you will be glorifying the second amendement when there is a crazy lunatic who will carry a gun and shoots you or your friends or a Supreme Court Justice or the President.

The Founding Fathers lived in a time of turmoil when trust and honor where things that were not so common as today. 223 years later, some people in the US still need to learn those lessons.

Gunbans are a GOOD thing. In the Netherlands, we have a gun crime related murder rate of 0,8 per 1,000 per month
In the UK, it is even less, like 0,4 per 1,000 per month

In the Chicago area alone there are sometimes 3 deaths a day related to gun crimes.

So I wonder who is the better of. We, socialistic, caring Europeans? Or you constitution worshipping, gunloving individuals!!

My Dutch friend, I think you are wrong, trust and honor were infinitely more prevalent during our Revolutionary Period than they are today. I am, however, eternally grateful for the substantial assistance offered by your country to help us with the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill; only to be turned down by President Obama. My country will forever be grateful for your benevolent gesture and common sense.
