Waukegan H.S. Places Third in State 'We the People' Competition
HOME Press Release: 12-08-2009
Waukegan High School students took third place at this past week’s state-level “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution" 2009 State Congressional Hearings in Chicago. A group of 11 students, all from Mr. Josh Bill’s AP Government class, bested a number of other schools from Illinois in the civic-oriented competition.

During the competition, students were asked to discuss several constitutional ideas or controversies, including the First and Fourteenth Amendments, which pertain to freedom of speech and civil rights, respectively. Students were judged by lawyers and legal professors on how well they answered a number of questions about people and events that helped shape the United States and its constitution.

Students representing Waukegan at the state finals included: Ulises Arenas, Amy Berggren Jerry Cruz, Jackie Flores, Noemi Larrondo, Manuel Mandujano, Jessica Mena, Juan Mercado, Bevilliya Shreve, Andrew Yoggerst and Ilda Zuniga.

“They’re very proud of themselves, and they should be,” said Mr. Bill. “They played essentially mistake-free.”

Waukegan’s students advanced to the state finals by winning a multi-school regional in October at the College of Lake County’s University Center. Following that victory, they spent many hours each week preparing for the “We the People” finals.

“The students were extremely dedicated. They really were working hard, and putting in time outside of class, as well as inside of class,” Mr. Bill said. “I want to make sure that my students know how proud of them I am. They taught me more than I can ever hope to teach them, and achieved great things for themselves and our school.”
