Illinois Budget - winthropharborguy - 07-02-2009 There is much hue and cry about social service funds being cut off due to the budget crisis. OK, I will be the bad guy here and point out the 800 lb gorilla in the room. Why are we spending so much on social services? 46.6% of our tax money is spent on health and human services. That's almost half! I see the stories in the news about how day care centers might have to shut down. In the News Sun I read that almost 50% of the YMCA's budget comes from the state. Why is that? That is ridiculous. Only 9.3% of our money is spent on government services. It should be 100% for crying out loud. (these figures are from the website http://www.budget.illinois.gov/budgetoverview.htm ) Now I don't think anyone begrudges helping those out in need. Give them a sort of bridge to help them over tough times but to spend almost half of our state money on these things is crazy. How much of this money is going to pay for services for illegal aliens? Is that being looked at? This is crazy what we are spending and that is only our state dollars. How much of our federal dollars are going for social services? Those of us who actually work for our money and must sacrifice much to pay these taxes resent giving our money to those that don't work for it and to do on such a large scale - well it doesn't sit too well with us. |
