WAUKEGAN -- The Oakwood Cemetery Walk, featuring businesses on Genesee Street, will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 27. Meet at Bowen Heritage Circle, 1911 N. Sheridan Road. Free bus transportation will be provided to Oakwood Cemetery for the guided tours and will depart at noon, 1:45 and 3:10 p.m. Haines Museum at Bowen Park will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This year's walk will feature businesses on Genesee Street, including Buck Meat Market, Higginbotham & Douglas bicycles, Ingalls Jewelry, Swanbrough Millinery, G.B. Watrous and Son hardware store and Genesee Theatre.
Among the characters portrayed will be Fred W. Buck, who ran Buck Meat Market. He also served as president of Waukegan Board of Education and was vice president of Waukegan National Bank.
The cemetery walk, an annual free event that began in 1995, takes the participants through the city cemetery (1851). Visitors to Oakwood have been taken back to a time and place that has ranged from pre-Civil War to as recent as 1979. Four to six "residents" are portrayed by local "actors" each year. There has always been diversity among the characters portrayed. Finding information about women and minorities has been challenging but rewarding.
The cemetery walk has featured the first female physician in Waukegan and George Washington Bell, a former slave turned Union soldier.
This annual event is a cooperative program between the Waukegan Park District, City of Waukegan, and the Waukegan Historical Society.

I attended, as I have for the last 11 years. The group does a great job researching their subjects and the "actors" do a great job of creating a living history event for the community.
