Re: Fatal Shooting near Walnut and Edwards - corndog - 08-26-2010 ClassicalLib17, It might or might not be to late, but I'll tell you this, Chief Greathouse is making very difficult to fight crime. He's continuing to make very bad decisions but he's very good in hiding them and making himself look good. Our Mayor and Aldermen don't see what he's doing, all they see is that he may be saving the city very little money, but in return he's putting the public in danger. If you think it's bad now, just wait until the Chief and Mayor bring the city's police department down to only 130 officers. You tell me....do you think 130 police officers is enough to protect this city??? The police department is at 148 right now, which is down from 175 which it is approved for. You tell me if that is enough???? Most importantly ask Chief Greathouse and the Mayor if that's enough. Go to the next city cousel meeting and ask the question if 130 officers is enough to keep the tax payers safe. You see how it is now, just imagine. Ask yourself if the Mayor is doing everything to keep citizens in this city. When you get rid of your downtown officer and community policing department, ask yourself if the deputy that told the jurors that downtown Waukegan is not safe was really right???? See when the last time the police department was down to130 officers, because we just regressed to that era. Waukegan is not the "City of Progress" its the city of Regress!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck to all of you, and don't forget to load up your weapons and wear your bullet proof vests. All we hear is how "broke" the city is, so what are we going to get the $$$ to pay up to 175 officers, or even keep the 148 we have now? What are the alternatives? I do know that there are ongoing problems with code compliance issues in my neighborhood. Various residents including myself have called Waukegan Code Compliance, but no one is there to answer the phone. JUST voice mail ALL the time. So the v/m says to leave contact info which IS done, still no call-back. I recently saw a comment in THE NEWS-SUN "Talk of the County" about this same issue with Wkgn Code Comcpliance. My concern is that once "quality of life" issues pile up from being neglected as they are now with such non-response from the City of Waukegan Code Compliance Office, then other problems develop which may unfortunately include increasing criminal problems. MORE for a limited police force to then cope with plus adding additional issues for residents of Waukegan. Increasing and ignored "quality of life" code compliance issues coupled with growing and festering criminal problems does not make for Waukegan to be a very "happy" place to be. But all we hear as citizens is "Waukegan is broke, Waukegan is broke, Waukegan is broke." So what can The Mayor and the Alderpersons do in such a fix? -- WT Reader Re: Fatal Shooting near Walnut and Edwards - Danno - 08-26-2010 corndog Wrote:ClassicalLib17,Are you advocating the raising of taxes? I'm not sure that is entirely the answer. I recently had an experience with a fairly young WPD officer and it was his unprofessional attitude that left me feeling abandoned. I thought folks liked Mr.Greathouse--ooops! that's BEFORE he became Chief--My bad..... :o Re: Fatal Shooting near Walnut and Edwards - WT Reader - 08-27-2010 Blackdiamond Wrote:WT--in answer to your last question: "NUTIN HONEY ". I thought folks liked Mr.Greathouse--ooops! that's BEFORE he became Chief--My bad..... :o Hey BD... It did seem that way. Hard to understand...how can Wkgn keep and even add more police when the city is so broke? No one here is denying that Wkgn is broke. So an idea would be to look for special funding, based upon our city's significant gang problem and struggles with violent crime. From the Fed, as the State of Illinois is even more broke than Wkgn. Now it all causes one to pause and say "How come Wkgn is so broke? How come Illinois is so broke?" Hmmmmm. Well, news report after news reporth has called Illinois one of the most politically corrupt states in the USA. Look at BLAGO...running around everywhere again, denying his guilt. Every time he makes an appearance on any media outlet, always introduced with Illinois in there somewhere. "Rod Blagojevich, the disgraced fomer Governor of Illinois." "Rod Blagojevich, the impeached ex-Governor of Illinois." Then we wonder why many business people steer clear of Illinois!! Because they do not want to deal with the kind of political culture that produced a Rod Blagojevich that still exists in Illinois. From the State House to the City Hall, Illinois is chalk full of politicians who have their hand out and lots of room in their pockets. Same deal with Waukegan in the past. And now SUPRISE, we are broke! So much of Illinois' and Wkgn's economic and development roles have to do with how mostly corrupt the entire political/leadership elites govern here. Govern mostly for Themselves, the rest of us can just go "eat cake." That's the way it is, and it ain't gonna change anytime soon. So get used to it...no money for police or much of anything else to serve the public's interest. Just too many political interests that need to be served first, foremost and always. -- WT Reader Re: Fatal Shooting near Walnut and Edwards - Danno - 08-27-2010 WT Reader Wrote:This type of corruption will exist as long as the system stays the same. The faces may change and the degree may change but there will always be some level corruption, not just in Illinois but everywhere. The system guarantees it. It's not good. I used to put a lot of blame on the people for not speaking out against these kind of things for we are the ultimate check and balance. But we the people shouldn't be blamed if we are unaware or have been lied to concerning the the true causes of corruption, but we now have a better understanding of the issue. It's is time to spread the word and begin to speak out against it. This will be difficult because there will be efforts to preseve the status quo. There are already mechanisms in place that prevent such change from happening, such as a divide and conquer stategy. We are very divided now. Also, don't forget, we ARE indoctrinated, each one of us, to accept some degree of corruption. Corruption permeates our system. It is not surprising to me a bit that it would occur in politics. it is very predictable and the causes do not originate in "human nature" but in environment. Blago was doing EXACTLY what he was TAUGHT to do.Blackdiamond Wrote:WT--in answer to your last question: "NUTIN HONEY ". I thought folks liked Mr.Greathouse--ooops! that's BEFORE he became Chief--My bad..... :o Why is the city broke? I'll bet the corruption that went on during the Genesee Theater project is partly responsible. There is evidence of that corruption in plain sight. Re: Fatal Shooting near Walnut and Edwards - goodintentions - 08-27-2010 Okay, but at some point -- you have to move forward. There was corruption during the Genesee project. Next. .... How do we get the guns off the streets of Waukegan? Re: Fatal Shooting near Walnut and Edwards - Dennis_Ista - 08-27-2010 gun control? Re: Fatal Shooting near Walnut and Edwards - corndog - 08-27-2010 The City of Waukegan is not as broke as they say. All the mayor is doing is penny pinching, there is money, any why is it that other city's are hireing police officers? Keeping a city operating cost money, there is no way around that. Just like our personal budgets, we have to pay rent we have to pay for gas for our cars and if you own a house you have bills to pay for water, sewer, electiricity, gas, and we have to pay for food. It all costs money. There was time maybe 3-4 years ago that downtown Waukegan was starting to look good, buisnesses were coming becasue of the Genesee Theater. To me, since the Genesee Theater opened is has declined in the amout of shows. Why is that? There is no reason that the Genesee Theater should not have some sort of shows almost everyday of the week. If the city can't work it anymore, how about trying to sell it. Would we get what we have spent on it, probably not, but sometimes you might have to take a loss, and try somethign else. But right now, downtown Waukegan looks just like it did 7-8 years ago, not much happening there. Fountain Square just stopped dead in its track. Who do we blame for that? All of these things are supposed to bring in money, but when it does'nt, who do you have to look to for money? The citizens, do we want them to raise taxes...heck no! But what other options are left. Grant money? You just can't stop and cut services to the citizens, we have to have police, fire and code compliance. Otherwise the citizens will be out gunned out numbered as they already are, streatching services to max just to get by is not the answer. And who cares that the Mayor is out there acting like a crossing guard, instead of wasting time with that maybe he should be in his office trying to find some money so this city does not get out of control. All I can say is that if things to start to get better, then I'll have to sell my house, and another life long resident leaves the city for greener pastures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
