Mayor Hyde and the debate - lewiston - 03-23-2009 Since there seems to be a problem with the WLC debate thread, I have started a new topic. Perhaps someone doesn't want us to carry on discussing Mayor Hyde's ineptitude? Okay, maybe I'm the idiot, but doesn't Mayor Hyde forever tell us that City Hall has nothing to do with the schools in Waukegan? Oh, wait, silly me, he tells us that when it suits him politically. Presumably Mr Couval et al made an assessment based on the number of potential voters at the Bulldogs rally versus the WLC debate.... I am disgusted to see that Mayor Hyde has attached Bulldog banners to his political signs across the city; taking advantage of the hard work and achievement of those kids when he doesn't give a flying fig about the state of the schools Re: Mayor Hyde and the debate - TKon2 - 03-23-2009 The City of Waukegan and the Waukegan Public Schools as with the Township and the Park District are all city governmental bodies that must support each other in many ways. I myself, a lifelong Waukegan resident have watched the school district take a major slide the last few years to the point where people simply do not want to come to Waukegan because of the schools...and if they do send their children to private schools if they can afford to. I applaude Mayor Hyde for doing what he thought was right in supporting this young group of men that has done our city proud in their quest to the state championships! I am by the same token appauled that the other candiates and the forum board did not find it appropriate to postpone their activities...(which could have easily been rescheduled) to go and do the same...support members of our community that have done good for the first time in 30 years! I am a graduate of WHS in the 1970's and found it rejuvinating to sport a Bulldog t-shirt for week. I made a special trip to the high school to purchase one. I wore it to work and around town to show support even though I did not have children there I am still a graduate! I would hope that no matter what branch of government you people support that you could come together and support the youth of our community and pat them on the back for a job well done! Set politics aside for 2 hours and honor these kids they deserve it...and having the Mayor present at the festivities shows the city's support. Grow up people and get off your political high horses and think about the positive things going on around you and celebrate! Re: Mayor Hyde and the debate - lewiston - 03-23-2009 The WHS team should be exceptionally proud of their achievement, and should be applauded. Nevertheless, I stand by my words. Mayor Hyde has no place jumping on the bandwagon of their celebrations when he disingenuously dismisses the schools as nothing to do with him for the other 364 days of the year. Your suggestion to reschedule the debate is impractical given the immediacy of the election. Besides, you said it yourself - the schools have gone downhill fast. The only hope that Waukegan Schools have right now is a change of administration on April 7th. Re: Mayor Hyde and the debate - seadog - 03-23-2009 The city of waukegan and district 60 are two different taxing bodies THE CITY RUNS THE CITY THE SCHOOL DISTRICT RUNS THE SCHOOLS The Mayor went there taught there and coached there. so how is he jumping on any band wagon? The only way the schools will change is the school board election. Re: Mayor Hyde and the debate - bubba13 - 03-23-2009 There has to be more important issues to discuss about the Mayoral election than Mayor Hyde choosing to attend the basketball team's rally. So he missed most of the debate. Candidates miss debates all the time. I heard over the weekend that the Park District candidates had a forum scheduled for Friday on WKRS. It was canceled. Someone should call Libby's show and find out what happened. Re: Mayor Hyde and the debate - lewiston - 03-23-2009 seadog Wrote:The city of waukegan and district 60 are two different taxing bodies THE CITY RUNS THE CITY THE SCHOOL DISTRICT RUNS THE SCHOOLS The city runs the city, not the schools. Duh. Mayor Hyde has told us that a zillion times himself. So why attach the name of the team to your political signs for re-election? Practice what you preach and keep the two separate. If you want to celebrate the schools success (and we all should) then put up banners elsewhere; decorate the whole town if necessary BUT NOT ATTACHED TO POLITICAL SIGNS FOR YOUR RE-ELECTION. Already his scheme has worked. How can anyone possibly criticize him - an attack at him is an attack at the WHS team. Actually City Hall may not run the schools, but any mayor who buries his head in the sand over the schools (i.e. the current one) is ignorant at best. Good schools are the thing that will save Waukegan. As pointed out above, poor schools will not attract new families or businesses. Having a good basketball team is not enough. The mayor can use his city hall pulpit to make the schools, hospitals and other Waukegan disasters HIS business; instead, he chooses to ignore these problems. Re: Mayor Hyde and the debate - TKon2 - 03-23-2009 Mayor Hyde is and has always supported the Waukegan School system...as a teacher, coach and administrator and he has not jumped on the bandwagon! Politics within the Waukegan School Board are what is holding the growth in the schools back it has nothing to do with the city and the Mayors race. If you want change in the school district you need to change the school board! Lack of administration in the schools is what is holding the schools back. Frivilous spending and astronomical administrator salaries is what is holding the school system back not the City of Waukegan Administration. You cannot tell me that the debate could have not been postponed a couple of hours to allow for the circumstances! Just shows me that the other 2 candidates and the forum folks do not care about the youth and the good things that are going on in this town to give a couple hours out of their day to celebrate somthing that comes along once in a great while. Dollars to donuts they are at the rally and parade tommorrow passing out their stuff! Re: Mayor Hyde and the debate - Danno - 03-23-2009 When the debate was first scheduled no one had a crystal ball to see how far the Waukegan basketball team would go. As the date got nearer and the conflict arose, Mayor Hyde made a decision based on his priorities. He chose high school basketball over informing Waukegan voters as to why he thinks he should be our leader. No surprise there at all. Very predictable. Re: Mayor Hyde and the debate - TKon2 - 03-24-2009 And why could the other two candidates and the forum hosts set politics aside for a couple of hours and all gone to celebrate the best thing that has happened to Waukegan in years? For one to think a politic debate is more inportant than kids in this community accomplishing something that is so wonderful and well deserving is beyond my comprehension! I respect Mayor Hyde for his decisions and back him 150%. I am sure that if one of the other two candidates were the current mayor they would have made the same decision and I too would have supported them and backed them 150%. This celebration is not about politics! It is about people in our community that have risen up and given us something to celebrate! I am taking off my job 3 hours early today and loosing 3 hours of pay to show my support for these kids and their accomplishments! As I said before I will bet dollars to donuts the other two candidates will be out there this afternoon! If they are not then they really do not deserve to represent our city if they cannot support its accomplishments! NUF SAID! Re: Mayor Hyde and the debate - Don Petrone - 03-24-2009 What's more important? Being a fan/cheer leader or meeting with voters to talk about the state of the city and vision for our future? Hyde didn't meet withthe firefighters but sent Vukovich instead. Then, on Friday he went to Peoria instead of meeting with the senior citizens at Lilac Ledge. Even though the meeting was at 10:30 in the morning and the game didn't start until that evening. Then he comeas to the debate an hour late and doesn' t answerthe questions. But taslks about what a great job the basketball players did. Being a fan and alumni of WHS is all good, but celebrating a basketball champiohip should not take precedence over meeting with the voters, discussing the issues and actually answering question. Hyde just wanted to be seen and proclaim his connection to WHS in hopes of getting votes. Political posturing on the backs of those wonderful kids is disgraceful. |
