I've heard that there have been at least a couple of serious incidents at the high school in the past week - including a teacher getting his nose broken by a student? Anyone else have any information?
Gawd...that's depressing. What has happened to my old high school? :o I never felt unsafe there, never. I remember being shocked when a friend told me they tried a cigarette.

As it stands now we are not even considering sending our children to the high school if we remain in Waukegan. Are you hearing that school board? Dr. Batiste? Aldermen? Mayor?

Why wasn't the teacher incident in the paper? And I suppose that student is still going to the school... didn't they close the alternative school?

What do they need to do those in the inside? Historyguy?

-full-time police presence?
-any gangmembers OUT
-uniforms
-smaller classes
-new security guards
-zero class disruption tolerance

What else? I had always hoped my children could go to my old school. Pffttt...no way. Why aren't parents complaining full-metal about this?
I had hoped to be able to send my children there as well. They would be the 4th generation from my family to graduate from Waukegan High School. But unless there are some drastic changes in the next few years, my children will either be attending private school or we will move out of Waukegan.
Hey Harper Valley PTA:
We should focus on all of the great things that are happening at the High School. These events greatly out number the "hear say." I will not respond to any yeah buts on this....
what abouts and so forths.......should also be included in my lack of response.

I imagine that it is difficult for people to wrap their minds around the fact that great things happen at Waukegan High School, especially when we are our worst enemies. Great Things Happen at Waukegan High School. I see them every day. The view from my seat is up close and personal. I see enthusiasm toward learning, kindness to those that may be less physically/mentally able or financially secure, and a desire to achieve in the academic arena. These students want to be shown the way and they will walk it. Don't get me wrong...
Yes, there are the few students out there that have misunderstood their purpose for being in school. We can/You can truly help these students, as well as the ones who are already succeeding. All you have to do is pick up the phone and lay down the mouse. Contact the school and get involved.
Homecoming was this weekend. Did you take time out of your busy day, just 30 minutes or so to view/participate like you did "when we were in school?" That is what communities do. Did you offer your garage to build a float with HS students because you have skills that would increase their knowledge of carpentry, electricity, art, dance, goal planning, budgeting, or just because you know that there is nothing better than helping young adults prove that they are talented and deserve to have an experience that will last a lifetime. I always see the same faces. Was yours one of them? I remember........our Golden Pyramid (one out of four fantabulous floats),all the parents who were willing to drop us off and pick us up at 9:30 on a school night despite our homework still needing to be done, all of the neighbors that would help make sure that these masterpieces, that they also put so much time into, would get out of the driveway--under the trees and down the street without falling apart. Have you called the High School and offered to be a mentor to the student(s) once a week, or do you have to go to Target for another piece of Chinese plastic, maybe your favorite show is on T.V.? I wonder how Mother Teresa managed when she would probably rather be watching Oprah after a hard days work. There are many talented people in this town, where are they? I see that they are all sharing via the written word. Get off your computer and do something worth while. I beg of you to talk to a neighbor, call a principal, mentor a student and make a real difference. These forums are a waste of time. Waukegan needs a grassroots movement. These are your schools! Please fee free to visit. We would love to see you and hear what you truly have to offer. America didn't become what it is today without a fight. It is time to fight! Let me see some action!!! Better late than never!!! Waukegan students need you to participate!Waukegan Staff need you to participate! Waukegan needs you to Participate!
As a teacher at the high school, I am continually amazed at the number of people in the Waukegan community that are aware of the obvious decline of WHS yet are seemingly unwilling to help! PLEASE visit the high school. Become a presence at the school! The more community members that are present in the school, the better our school will be!

YOu got to be kidding me. Problems at the school are because strangers don't come in and take over FOR FREE? What are we paying your fools for then?
First fix all the problems happening in the homes.
Thanks for your input bulldog. Could you post more about what goes on in the high school? The good news isn't getting out so please let us know more. What is a typical day like?

Our children are all in elementary school. We are greatly involved at this level; music, scouts, PTO, their friends, a few district committees, board meetings, etc... As they say, only so much time in a day... Smile Each level the kids are in we will be just as involved.

However, I have spoken to several of the board members about the high school and security.

How are the small learning communities working out?

One of the biggest problems all the taxpayers have... HIGH PROPERTY TAXES.

Suggestion #1. Idea
Any student not complying with the rules, the parents are charged double school taxes for each Childs infraction. Parents won't/can't control the child in the household can't just send the kid to school to let the system deal with their problem child, they'll have to pay dearly for that privilege. Wink

Suggestion #2. Idea Idea
Count the number of kids in a home that goes to school. Charge that home a percentage rate for school taxes. Start with a no child school tax as the base rate then multiply it up per child. I don't mind paying my FAIR SHARE, it's totally outrageous I have to pay for all there FREEBIES! I think time has come that they start footing their own bills.

ANY other suggestions to lowering our overly burdened real-estate taxes is welcome. I can't understand why it costs 6 times more to run the schools than running a city. :o

Somewhere it just don't add up.
