PROPOSED STATE GRANT FUNDING CUTS COULD AFFECT DISTRICT 60

HOME Press Release: 06-17-2009

Waukegan, IL: As the uncertainty mounts at the state level and our legislators continue to grapple with resolving the unfinished business with the budget, the Waukegan Public School District #60 wishes to inform the community about potential grant reductions on the State level that may negatively affect programs and educators locally.

In a letter to educators received recently, Illinois School Superintendent Christopher A. Koch informed school districts across the state that the Illinois General Assembly has asked the Illinois State Board of Education to cut $500 million from its budget. The reduction may result in abridged funding to programs that do not fall under General State Aid (GSA), or Mandated Categoricals (MCATS) to school districts statewide.

District #60 would not be immune to these cuts. A number of programs in the district currently rely on large amounts of State grant funding to remain operational. Click on the link below, entitled, "Fiscal Impact Chart" to view a chart that explains what programs within the Waukegan Public School system could be affected by funding reductions. The chart shows how much grant funding each program receives, as well as how many employees are paid through those grants, the number of employees who stand to be affected by a reduction in funding, and how much local monies would be needed to meet personnel costs if funding were reduced by 50 percent, or completely.

Please be advised that the information in the chart is simply precautionary. The Illinois State Board of Education has not yet announced how much, if any funding will be cut from local programs, but the Waukegan School Board and district administrators are working hard during our current budget process to prepare for every scenario.
